Diversity of Thought Virtual Empowerment Academy

The Diversity of Thought Virtual Empowerment Academy, hosted by the Office of Mentorship & Student Development at The University of Akron, is an annual program designed to help high school students feel confident and well-prepared for their transition to UA. Through monthly online sessions held from 11 AM to noon, participants will explore the university’s academic programs, campus resources, and student life opportunities. The program provides valuable guidance and support to help students start their college journey on the right track. Join us to learn how UA can help you achieve your goals!

ADVANCE Jumpstart New Roo Orientation

The ADVANCE JumpStart New Roo Orientation at The University of Akron goes beyond a typical introduction to campus life by offering a unique overnight stay in a dorm. This immersive experience allows new students to fully engage with the UA community, building connections with current students, mentors, faculty, and university leaders. The orientation is designed to equip students with the tools and resources needed to successfully navigate the challenges of their first year.

ADVANCE JumpStart creates an environment that encourages meaningful connections and personal growth, helping students feel supported and prepared for their academic journey. Open to all students, regardless of GPA, the program is especially beneficial for those with a high school GPA of 2.50 or lower. We strongly encourage these students to participate and take advantage of this comprehensive introduction to university life.


FreshStart Learning Community

Join the ‘FreshStart Learning Community,’ an initiative by the Office of Mentorship & Student Development at The University of Akron, designed to support all incoming college freshmen, with special attention given to those who may not have reached their desired high school GPA. FreshStart is dedicated to helping students build a strong academic foundation while fostering personal and academic growth.

Through mentorship, collaborative learning opportunities, and a focus on individual development, FreshStart provides students with the tools they need for a smooth and successful transition into university life. First to Go Learning Community

Welcome to the 'First to Go Learning Community' at The University of Akron, an initiative by the Office of Mentorship & Student Development designed specifically for first-generation freshmen. This program is dedicated to helping students build a strong foundation for academic success through mentorship, collaborative learning, and personal growth.

We honor the unique experiences of first-generation students and provide the tools and support needed for a seamless transition into college life. Participants will benefit from connections with campus and community leaders, personalized guidance, service-learning opportunities, a structured Study Table program, and potential access to financial assistance. Open to all majors, we invite motivated first-generation freshmen to start their educational journey with us.


Peer Mentoring Services

At The University of Akron, mentoring is all about building a genuine connection between a first-year student and an experienced peer mentor who’s been in their shoes. Through the Office of Mentorship & Student Development, this year-long, voluntary program creates a supportive partnership where both mentor and mentee grow together, guided by shared goals and clear expectations.

Peer Mentoring Services is designed to make the transition to college life easier and more rewarding. By connecting with a mentor, first-year students gain insider tips on navigating campus life, discover helpful resources, and feel a stronger sense of belonging. It’s about more than just advice—it’s about having someone in your corner who’s ready to help you succeed.

Harmony Convocation Ceremony

As the spring semester draws to a close and graduation approaches, the Office of Mentorship & Student Belonging invites all graduating students to participate in the annual Harmony Convocation Ceremony.
